T O P I C R E V I E WSpaceAholicI recall the seller previously offering up this item (and the affiliated controversy) but cant find the original thread or resolution.mikej3644175027: Flown SL-2 main parachute, back in December 2003.He was initially arrested for possession of stolen property, but eventually cleared of charges.Robert PearlmanThe seller is the legal owner and has the right to sell the parachute. From our 2004 article: A museum volunteer whose eBay sale of an Apollo capsule's main recovery parachute lead to his arrest for possession of stolen property, was cleared of all charges earlier this month, according to the district attorney in an interview with the Poughkeepsie Journal.Whether Christopher Rogine of Red Hook, New York will retain ownership of the parachute however, still needs to be settled by an arbitrator, says his lawyer in the Journal. Although we didn't file another story, Rogine was later identified as the legal owner.SpaceAholicAh... thanks guys. This is a time when one wishes they had a little extra pocket change to support acquisition.history in miniaturePool our money!!!!gliderpilotuk quote:Originally posted by historyinminiature:Pool our money!!!!And cut it into little bits? Robert PearlmanGiven how this particular parachute came to be in private possession... ...the museum asked if they would like these two parachutes, because they were going to shred them. ...I would hope that whoever purchased it now, if indeed it sells, would have the good sense of keeping it intact.tegwilymThat would make a whole bunch of nice laptop bags to go along with the Soyuz bags!...although, I would agree that should be intact.SpaceAholic quote:Originally posted by gliderpilotuk: And cut it into little bits? This is one artifact that will be safe from the scissors...Robert PearlmanAre congratulations in order, Scott?bengutteryThis is an epic piece. Congrats to whomever. May I suggest buying your spouse some flowers?SpaceAholicAffirm...space1Congratulations, Scott! I'm glad you were able to pull it off.history in miniatureScott, If you got her, way to go, now I'll be able to sleep at night knowing it will remain intact. Robert PearlmanCongratulations Scott! So what are your plans for the parachute? Will you display it inside your home? Keep it packed? Loan it to a museum? It is really a tremendous (pun intended) addition to your already impressive collection.SpaceAholicAfter it arrives, intend to bring it out to a local hanger, unpack and photodocument the artifact. Would like to establish contact with a conservator at NASM (or somebody proficient with preserving the textiles used in the chute) to come up with a storage gameplan. Downstream, a temporary institutional loan would not be out of the question (have a couple of artifacts on loan currently). The realization struck me this morning that with the exception of a few heatshield slices, this will be the first complete flown Apollo artifact in the collection (the largest at least). An additional irony is that SL2 was an all Navy crew so I feel an especially strong connection to the chute.AztecdougScott, I can't help but think of that Johnny Cash song "One Piece at a Time" when I think of you anymore... That is soooo cool. Congratulations!mjanovec quote:Originally posted by Aztecdoug:Scott, I can't help but think of that Johnny Cash song "One Piece at a Time" when I think of you anymore... Funny! Though the difference is that Scott's collection has "cost a dime" (and probably a fair bit more). I'll bet the seller will sleep well also given the history of his dealings with this!Awesome acquisition Scott congratulations.garymilgromCongratulations Scott - a beautiful addition to a fantastic collection.
